These engines were introduced in 1932 as a larger edition to the L2 series, which had at that date, been in production for three years. It can be fairly said that the Gardner L3 engine set definitive standards by which others were judged, whether fuel and lubricating oil consumption, reliability, maintenance or ease of starting.
The finest obtainable materials were used throughout its construction which, in conjunction with sound design, development and craftsmanship of the highest order, produced an engine which enjoys a truly great reputation throughout the world.
